Magazine Cover Review
The analysis of the Better Homes and Garden magazine begins with the cover. At first glance it is apparent it is Halloween, and the content can contain a craft of painting pumpkins and baking ghost cookies. The feature article is on new ways to carve a silhouette on your pumpkin by not cutting through it and shaving it down to create shadows. This is a technique seen in the pumpkin carving competitions and they are displaying it to inspire others to create it. In another article it was displaying a diy style silver clothing costume for your whole family to match. This develops interest from families and will cultivate brand loyalty amongst the children in the family seeing it in the magazine rack at home for many years. This builds the connection for many years of waiting to check out at the grocery store and connecting to the childhood memories. The generational marketing plan being focused on families will guarantee the security of the advertising dollars.
Next analysis of the magazine titled Cosmopolitan and, on the cover, it displays a slim girl with a dark purple slim fitting dress. Her look is very mischievous yet confident. The titles around her include sex toy boom, never put-on heels again, fake a mani, and wear a damn mask. These all apply to the female 18-25 demographic and they claim to be the industry standard in fashion for that age group. The featured article is a virtual interview with Joey King and her upcoming “Netflix making a second Kissing Booth movie” (Baty). This is
relevant to the magazine's demographic and will create returning customers if they keep up with current trends in Hollywood.
Oprah Magazine's next analysis starts on the cover with Oprah and a dog with her dressed in orange and white. The colors are signifying a fall feel with green, orange, yellow, and white or cream. The letters Joy mimicking the O in Oprah magazine logo and added in the morning under the words Joy. The featured article says tea and sympathy next to Checkout time. This signifies they will discuss ways to cope with the psychological effects of Covid in the US. Oprah has her own following and marketing through her many outlets such as her own television channel and magazine in stores and airports. She has been the go-to for advice for many generations.
Southern Living magazine front cover first letters on the magazine with “The Food Issue'' so you can assume that this will be the best of their southern recipes. A huge apple Bundt cake dripping with icing is displayed with southern wooded flair and a very cinnamon apple color tone. The feature article is from Jerrelle Guy and shows her pie recipe that looks delicious. This magazine is part of the family's holiday traditions to find new recipes and decorations for a southern holiday meal. This creates a need to cultivate brand loyalty.
Upon first analysis of the Vogue Magazine cover it emphasizes a monochromatic photograph of Rihanna with the words rebel under her with the title “Rihanna rewrites the rules” in red letters. This brings emphasis to the feel of this cover displaying changing or rules or a different way of life for the pop star. The brand loyalty is geared towards the Rihanna fans and her demographic. Vogue cover is a prestigious accomplishment in our culture, and they have elevated their brand to be the industry standard amongst Fashion and
Culture. The feature articles are about women empowerment and taking charge in the images that are displayed that is the feeling from the images.
The reference article ties into this week's analysis by the following statements: “Most magazines now resemble movie posters than the dry pages of a book” (Scherer, 33). This is so true especially when we look at the simplistic yet bold look of Rihanna on the Vogue cover. There is another relatable statement from the article. “They are filled with color, oversized headlines, graphics, photos, and pull quotes. This effect is true on most of the magazine covers that are analyzed in this essay.
